Hurd’s Backers are trying to steal CD-3 water
Jeff Hurd’s biggest Denver supporters want to build a pipeline to ship water from the San Luis Valley to the Denver suburbs in the middle of a drought. The pipeline is estimated to take 19 million gallons of water from our river each day. The plan is backed by former Governor Bill Owens, who has been backing Hurd since the beginning of the campaign and has been described as “one of the first and, clearly, the most prominent Republican” to support Hurd’s campaign.
What’s the plan?
SPECIAL INTEREST MONEY
A “well connected” Denver area developer has teamed up with Hurd’s biggest backer, former Governor Bill Owens, to “export millions of gallons of water” from the “drought stricken” San Luis Valley region.
EXPORTING OUR WATER
Hurd’s allies want to export 22,000 acre-feet of water a year, which is the equivalent of 19.6 million gallons of water a day.
4X CROPS COST INCREASE
As Hurd’s allies push this plan to ship water out of our community, the “cost to water crops could nearly quadruple” in the San Luis Valley due to a multi-year drought that has devastated the valley.
Jeff Hurd Supports Politicians who want a National Abortion ban
Jeff Hurd wants to let politicians control women’s healthcare. Hurd supported overturning Roe v. Wade, opening the door for abortion bands across the country which would ban abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother — including here in Colorado. And he’s campaigning with Speaker Mike Johnson — one of the most extreme members of Congress. Hurd even refuses to say how he voted on the 2020 ballot amendment that would have banned abortions here in Colorado without exceptions for rape or incest.
Background
Hurd supported overturning Roe v. Wade
After Roe was overturned, women in states across the country lost access to abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother. Republican lawmakers are even pushing for laws to allow women to be charged with murder for having an abortion, and restricting forms of birth control.
Campaigns with extremists
Hurd campaigns with some of the most extreme members of Congress including Lauren Boebert, Jim Jordan, and Mike Johnson, who has “signed on to some of the toughest anti-abortion bills” in Congress and compared abortion to the Holocaust.
REFUSES TRANSPARENCY
Hurd refuses to say how he voted for the 2020 ballot amendment that would have banned abortions in Colorado, claiming that he “couldn’t remember” how he voted on the proposal that had a “lack of protections for victims of rape and incest”.
NO TRANSPARENCY
By refusing to participate in debates, disclose his votes, or reveal his corporate connections, Jeff Hurd demonstrates a troubling lack of transparency and openness with the voters.
- Jeff Hurd repeatedly skipped Republican Primary Debates.
- Instead, he relied on Corporate PAC and dark money to get him through the primary — including thousands from the Koch Brothers Foundation.
- He won't say who he supports for president.
- He won't disclose how he voted on the 2020 abortion amendment or how he will vote on Amendment 79 this November.
- He won't release his corporate client list of who he worked for as an attorney so we don't know who he will be beholden to in Congress.
- He has refused to hold public events with voters in CD-3.
- He refuses to support term limits for members of Congress.
- He refuses to support banning stock trading for members of Congress.
